Who needs FSSAI registration?
Every food business operator in India — restaurants, cloud kitchens, packaged food sellers, food trucks, caterers, food manufacturers, distributors, and e-commerce food sellers must have FSSAI registration or license.
What's the difference between FSSAI registration and license?
Basic Registration is for small businesses with turnover up to ₹12 lakh. State License is for turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore. Central License is for turnover above ₹20 crore, importers, and multi-state operations.
How long does FSSAI registration take?
Basic Registration takes 3-7 working days. State License takes 30-60 days. Central License may take 60-90 days, depending on inspection requirements.
What is the penalty for operating without FSSAI?
Operating without a valid FSSAI license can attract a fine up to ₹5 lakh. Additionally, the food business can be shut down by authorities.
Can I apply for FSSAI online?
Yes. All FSSAI applications are filed online through the FoSCoS portal (foscos.fssai.gov.in). Physical submission is no longer accepted.
